Water is a recurring theme throughout my work. Growing in Seoul, a forest of concrete towers, I was always drawn to Han river that runs through the city as a place of reflection and renewal. After moving to the San Francisco Bay Area, the proximity of the Pacific Ocean profoundly expanded my relationship to both nature and creativity. Despite having little swimming experience, I began surfing and swimming in the Bay and gradually developed a daily open water practice. Immersion in water awakened something essential in me, a source of vitality and creative energy. Through painting, I continue to deepen my relationship with water, as a way of connecting to something larger than me.
